Anxiety is an issue that you may know about. You’ve heard about it from friends, family, and acquaintances. Suddenly one day someone you know can’t come into work because of a panic attack or a family member can’t join in on an event because they have social anxiety. These situations often lead to people creating anxiety myths that may or may not hold water when closely looked at. 

The Myths You’ve Heard About Anxiety

Myths are common when something isn’t fully understood. Some of these myths can even create the wrong impression and harm an individual with it. So it’s best that we take a look at some of the most common myths you’ve likely heard of when talking about anxiety.

Myth#1 Anxiety Is “Just In Your Head”

This is the most common myth that you’re going to hear out of any mental health problem. The term “it’s all in your head” or “you’ll get over it eventually” can be very harmful because it ignores a crippling mental health disorder. It is especially harmful for people with anxiety because they are the least likely to seek out help. If they think that it will just go away after a period of time, then they are just prolonging the time they have to suffer from mental health disorders like anxiety.

Myth#2 Anxiety is Easy to Track and Find

One thing that many people think is that anxiety is an easy mental health disorder to find. However, there are times when a person could be functioning perfectly fine on the surface. But once you take a deep look at how they go about each day, then you might find out that they could have anxiety. Never disregard the ability of anxiety to hide in even the most stable of individuals.

Myth#3 A Person With Anxiety is Automatically Anti-Social

Anxiety is certainly a problem that can cause social issues to arise. However, not everyone with anxiety is automatically anti-social. Some people with anxiety can be very outgoing, but their anxiety manifests in other ways. For example, anxiety could manifest itself in a person’s work ethic.  

Myth#4 Anxiety Happens When A Person Is Put in A Stressful Situation

Anxiety and stress often go hand in hand. But did you know that stress is only a minor portion of anxiety’s cause and effect? Stress can certainly be the cause of anxiety, but there are many other factors that could cause it. Even a person’s genetics can be the cause of anxiety.

Myth#5 Professional Help is Needed To Cure Anxiety

You’re going to hear this myth often from various professionals to get more clients. But we’re here to tell you that getting rid of anxiety can be done even without the help of a professional. However, it can take a long time and a large amount of support from friends and family. It is possible, but you certainly should still go to a professional in order to make the process faster and easier.
